There’s a bunch of Morrisonite floatin’ around the board right now – here’s another one. Got a lotta stuff in here – trees up close, some mountains in the distance, clouds, and a low-flyin’ bird. ;D This one’s Graveyard Point plume agate. I glued a 2 mm slice of basenite on the back, but that was too thick and clunky, so I ground and lapped it down to just under 1/64”. Rich

Wow, that plume is awesome. And I love the morrisonite. I definitely have to find some more of it.

KD (short answer) – jasper, Tiger Oak (freebie), Krazy glue (longer answer) – The basenite used to back up cabs is most likely a black, fine-grained, flinty jasper. Basanite is probably the correct spelling, but all I ever see is basenite when referring to cabs. Maybe to distinguish it from the other basanite - an igneous basaltic rock (which can also be fine-grained and black, but lower in silica). Wikipedia: “The term basanite has been used occasionally to refer to the mineral jasper, for example a black flinty or cherty jasper found in several New England states . . . Such varieties of jasper are also informally known as Lydian stone, lydite and touchstone and have been used to test for the purity of precious metal alloys.” Encarta: “Touchstone - hard, black stone, occasionally used in assaying or testing the purity of gold or silver. The original touchstone was a peculiar bituminous quartz or flinty slate obtained from Lydia in Asia Minor and hence known as Lydian stone; but basanite, a type of black basalt, may be employed. The fineness of gold, as determined by touchstone, is judged from the color of the streak made by the metal on the stone.” And then there’s bassanite ;D - a white mineral consisting of hydrated calcium sulfate; a pseudomorph of gypsum. Geoff – I only see one dealer selling it on eBay and it ain’t cheap, $30+ a pound, and you'll have to cut it thin yourself, wasting half of it! search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZfireoflife Rich

I see Basanite quite frequently at dealers here in California. It is real common material almost always used for backing cabs especially Opal triplets. Typically it is $3 to $4 a pound. It can be found at Davis Creek where the Rainbow Obsidian is found. It is also found in Central Oregon. $30 a pound is outrageous for such a common material! Pm me and I'll look around for a slab. It may take some time to find it. I'm in the chaos of moving to our retirement house and most everything is packed up .......somewhere. Bob

Great work on that doublet! It sure does make those plumes stand out! The morrisonite is great, too. I love the colours and the scene!
