I hope I can ask this here. I have an 8" flat lap that I'm learning to grind on. I've tried polishing with cerium oxide and just don't like it. Is there something better I can use on my lap to get a nice glossy finish or do I need to use a different piece of equipment. Thanks, Miner John

Are you using a High Tech Diamond or Ameritool unit? If you bought it complete it should have a polish pad and 14000 diamond compound. It would work better with a sponge pad under the polish pad to cushion. Agates and jaspers should polish up nicely on a felt or leather pad with cerium. Aluminum oxide in a .5 micron or finer will polish softer materials as well as the agates/jaspers. Dampen the polish pad with water. Mix the polish with water and brush on the pad. Should work. I'm assuming you went through sanding steps before polishing.

I do all my polishing with some flexible diamond pads that I stick on the flat lap. It works great. Tried with cerium oxide on felt in the beginning, but it was a mess.
