I have a great wife who always gets me one "kids" gift for Christmas. I'm 43 and now the proud owner of a $15 Walmart Rock Tumbler. We had found many rocks on the Beach up here in the Boston area and I had commented on how they may look if they were tumbled. Well, I started with the medium grit since they were already smoothed out and now moved to the polishing stage for the last five days. The instructions say 4-7 days but it will obviously be longer. I have learned that you should match stones of like hardness as I nearly ground one away. I have not used the bag of gemstones that came with it but I will next. Is anyone familiar with some of the stones in this area? I can't turn this in to an obsession but what I've read so far is very intriguing. Can anyone suggest a simple pocket manual to help identify common stones and gemstones. One last question regarding the 3 pound tumbler I read about in the message board "That thing got a Hemi"?

Where do you live? Depending on the area, you can find a book with stie locations and specifics on different rock types.
