Hey All, We got my daughter a rock tumbler a couple of weeks ago & are finishing up our first batch. Daughter is now casting about for candidates for the next batch, and remembered this pretty guy here: picasaweb.google.com/rpardee/RockForTumbling/photo#5206667137175178802We can't remember where we got it (we live in the Nortwestern US, if that's any help). Anyway--we especially like the red dots all over it. Does anybody have a guess as to whether those red dots will remain after a polish, or if they're just surface features that will abrade off? Many thanks! Roy and Daughter.

That looks remarkably like a piece of poppy jasper from Washington's Olympic penninsula, though similar stuff occurs elsewhere in the west, especially in California. If it is poppy jasper, yes, it takes a great shine, and the spots run throughout the rock so remain on the final piece: -Don

FOr certian poppy jasper. dots won't come off. But those pitts may be a problem. You might be able to fill them with super glue.

If the pits aren't too deep, I'd prefer to remove them by a combination of Dremel grinding and coarse-grind tumbling. I've never been happy with sealants... it's an interesting topic though -- I think I'll start a thread about it on the rock tumbling board.

Wow--thanks guys! We're in Washington State, not far at all from the Olympic Peninsula, so it's likely that it is poppy jasper. Okay--that baby's going in the tumbler. Thanks! Roy & Daughter
