I bought a lot of Prehnite; almost half was dime size or smaller so I decided to tumble a batch. This stuff was a challenge. After about 2 days it was real foamy and after the third day I couldn't hear the rocks tumbling. Two times I scooped out think foam and added water. Then I added borax and rock salt. That helped, but still foamy. It took about 2 months from start to finish. The AO wasn't two foamy but I let it roll for about 2 and half weeks. The color ranged from a yellow to a mint green. The black stuff was a mineral called epidote Some pieces really let the sun in and have a cool "glow". These seem big enough to have faceted. Anyone do faceting? send me a pm. I got these and some bigger pieces that look pretty clean. Enjoy; any advice on the foamy stuff feel free to post.

Wow! All things considered...you did real well with that batch! When you bought the rough...it was already broke up? I've noticed that if I have to use a hammer to break up rough, it automatically has lots of stress fractures and that could be what happened with your batch. But...you have some REALLY nice stones there and if you don't find someone to actually facet, here's something you could try if you have a drill or grinder... These are just quartz faceted beads but I think your prehnite would look REALLY beautiful this way. OK...I'll shut up now!

Liz... I got a box of 10lbs and most of it was the little stuff. I knew most would be. I just seperated and put into the tumbler. I never had anything get such thick foam before. All the pieces looked clean (no dirt organics). The necklace is really nice. I have a flat lap. I will have to try making some beads like that. Thanks for the idea.

The foam is a little weird. LOL I've had a little foam in some tumbles but nothing like what you describe. This might be a pain in the butt...but try this...When you do another load of the prehnite...first do a plain borax tumble for about 24 hrs. Nothing but water, borax & the rough. After 24 hours...check it out. If it's something on the rock...maybe it'll help wash it off. If after that, your barrel still has foam when you add the coarse grit & set it rolling...then I guess it's something inherant with the stone. BUT...it could be any number of things and I'm just stabbing in the dark!

interesting looking stuff! got a good shine on it. i had a batch of glass (obsidian) burst on me (my fault for not checking it), but i have found that borax added to almost any stage will combat that effect.
