I have bought facet rough from Jerry in the past and can say he is a reputable dealer. I have seen his work as a faceter and it is top notch! I have NOT taken any classes at his location, BUT would take a class from him if it was in an area I am not experienced in. Not exactly a definitive recommendation, call it qualified. I can say that I have heard from others that Jerry is a good instructor and his classes enjoyable, just no first hand experience. Have you taken a look at the classes offered at Wild Acres or William Holland? If you are willing to come all the way to North Carolina to take a class then I WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend Wild Acres.

Hi Dawn...since I don't know your situation...I am going to say the easiest way to get into Lapidary is with a club that is established...starting with faceting is a very tough way to start...like driving in the Indy 500 with a learners permit...not to say it can't be done but starting there is a challenge at best. With a club, you get to start with people that may show you the basics and then cut you loose on the club equipment...it is also the cheapest way to get a start on actual lapidary skills...once you get to know things like dopping, grits, cabbing and transfer jigs, a class would be so much more meaningful IMHO.

Thank you both for the advice. I have finally found a club in my area. My first meeting this Thursday. I am so excited. Is there anything I am suppose to bring with me? I don't really have anything ready and polished. I just have some rough stuff from Gem Mountain. Dawn

I would guess maybe a notebook and a couple of pieces of your rough would be OK...rockhounds are usually very friendly folks...how close are you to Brownsville?? My in-laws winter there and always ask about rocks to look for...I have no clue what is out there. Good luck on your adventure!!

Brownsville is 462 miles south of me. We live 1 1/2 hours from Houston. Thanks for telling me what I need. Dawn

Hey Larry, The meeting was great. They had a half and half drawing and I bought tickets for it and won it. That is you buy tickets and half the money goes back to the club and half goes to the winner. When I went up to collect the money I told them to take the money out so I could join the club. They were excited they had a new member. We have a show or some function coming up in August. It was not easy to get all the details of everything in one meeting. I met alot of really neat people there. The meet once a month for the meeting and once a month for a social. Their social is visiting, eating and playing cards and dominoes. I am looking forward to the next meeting.

Dawn,
Glad it went well for you...do they have equipment or is it a party group?? In any event I think you can make the contacts you need to further develop...such a deal one meeting and you win the half & half...must be destiny!! Now if you want to knock their socks off take some of your goodies with you at the next meet!! You'll have info all over the place...LOL
