Some of the best collecting sites here in N.C. are located on Forest Service land. There have been repeated problems with a few bad eggs damaging property, not filling holes, digging creek banks, etc. It is now at the point ALL collecting in sites under F.S. control is in danger of being halted completely. The Grinshawe Corundum Site in Transylvania County is completely closed and Walker Creek kyanite is not currently available. Everyone should contact the Forest Service ranger in your area to encourage them to allow REASONABLE recreational collecting. It is being discussed nationally that ONLY surface collecting be allowed and NO tools of any sort may be the rule soon. Those digging for resale make it really hard on those of us just improving our collections or getting a little cutting material. The Grimshawe site had trenches several feet wide and deep and almost 20 YARDS long-THAT is not recreational collecting. That damage was repaired by the park service and now someone has been caught digging in the established buffer zone around the creek. The site is now closed totally. Everyone who likes to get out and hunt a few rocks, PLEASE let your local office know that our hobby is alive and well!!

Thanks in advance.
