I belong to the Buffalo Geological Society and got this (partial) email - Saturday, July 19th - Barton Garnet Mine (old Gore Mtn. mine site), Barton Mines Rd. off Rte. 28 near North River, NY. 11am. $5(possibly up to $7)/person. We'll have access to Pit #1 (no tools allowed) where the public is allowed, and possibly we’ll have access to two other areas the public isn't ordinarily allowed --- Pit #8/9 (tools allowed - hard hats, safety glasses & sturdy shoes required), and another area no-one has ever been allowed into that contains tailings from when they created the roads. Charge for anything we remove is probably still $1/pound. It is possible that the new C.O.O.will increase charges from last year - I should know when they open June 30th. Gift Shop/facilities/drink stand/children's sluice. Several members found facet-grade garnet last year. Please let me know if you're going - headcount is required ahead of time. Thank you, Nancy McCann mineraltrips@rasny.orgThis is a trip with the Rochester Mineral and Lapidary Society. I suspect you'd have to be a member of either to go one this one...BUT....that leaves Sunday open for a trip to a Herkimer Diamond mine. I even think my wife wants to go to this one So, is anyone game to go July 20th? Lee

hmmm, i've heard the Garnet mine is a bit of a rip off, but never been there personally. i've been to the Herkimer Diamond Mine Store once, and that was a bit of a disappointment as well, but that is the ONLY rock shop within 100 miles from here. i'll keep that date in mind tho and maybe try and get there.

Most "gem" mines are. But maybe going into the non-public areas would be good. Never bought anything at the store at Ace of Diamonds, but I do want to try a different mine this year.

that sounds interesting. I have a baby food jar about 1/2 full of the diamonds. Wish i knew how to facet or do something with them I think they are pretty. At the last show i should one still in the matrix. I only have 3 that way, and now i have 2 lol

I'm taking the trip up to Herkimer on the 29th and 30th of July. I've rented one of the cabins for my daughter and I. Never heard of the garnet mine though.

Sounds fun. Be prepared for a day of hard, hard work. That dolomite is nasty stuff.
My hubby and I just went in May. We came home with a few diamonds, including a couple of really nice ones. Small, but nice. One of the guys with a claim hit a pocket and was pulling the diamonds out by the handful. Much bigger ones than the small diamonds we were finding in the rocks.

I've done the Ace of Diamond 2-3 times already. I just wish I'd hit the lottery so I could pay the $1500 for the mine to open a pocket for me....Oh well... I'm still up in the air about the trip - if some of you guys are going to show, I'll go for certain. I am thinking of blowing off the garnet mine part of the trip and spend 2 days looking for Herkimers or maybe go to Old Forge for a day and pan for gold.
