I have a question.
I order some Banded Amethyst Crystals and an extra 3 lb. Barrel for my 33b from the Rock Shed. My question is I am using the to barrels that came with the tumbler for the course and fine grind. The new one that I just order I will use for the pre polish and the polish or just the polish stage. What do all of you think? Do I use the new barrel for just the polish stage or should I use it for the pre polish and polish?
Thanks Roger

i have a double 3lb & 2 -9LB barrels for each size i have a polish only barrel .the other barrels i use from 46-70 grit to 1000 gr AO pre polish . i rinse out very well between 46-70 or 60-90 stages going to 120-220 then after that going to 500 & 1000 i rinse out well & re-add water & ivory snow soap or other non foaming soap powder along with the plastic beads that i used [so i can reuse in same grit size again] for a few hours .to make sure barrel , rocks & pellets don't have as good of chance to tranfer grit . hopefully this helps !! paul

I would keep the new barell to just polish and final burnish myself.

If I had three barrels to use for all four stages I would dedicate one to coarse & fine SC grit stages, one for AO prepolish & the other strictly for polish. SC grits will eventually become embedded in the barrel walls and can transfer into AO prepolish or polish runs, ruining or significantly antagonizing the batch.
If a little bit of coarse grit transfers into the fine grit it will be broken down too quickly to cause any noticeable "damage" and the prepolish & polish stages can easilly compensate for some slightly deeper scratches with a little extra time so you would never even notice. But, if some SC gets caught up in the barrel and gets released into a prepolish or polish load then you could start having problems.

Well thanks for all the input. I will use the new barrel for just the Polish stage.
Thanks Roger
