Hi, everyone! We were able to extend this week-end until Monday and went out for a short, but dense vacation. We headed Friday for a spa located about 250 miles away from home. Very close to this spa there's a great spot for rockhounding. So, here we are ready to begin the search: A pretty big rock... ... that I had to crack... ... to be able to take some cool pieces of it: The haul was pretty impressive, but I have to admit it was completed by some finds of a local man (the one who helped me one year ago to carry that big stump, if you remember) In the after-noon, we had a spa, and the next day we went to visit an ancient town located into the mountains. It was the capital of the ancient dacians. take a look here for more details: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SarmisegetusaThe road till there is pretty rough, 15 miles of not-asphalted road. We managed to reach by car only about 12...13 miles, and then by foot: And we finally reached to the ancient walls: The most interesting area is the area of the temples. Notice those big round column bases and just think how were they brought here at 1200 m height 2000 years ago: Other temples: Another spa in the after-noon, and Monday we came back. We planned the return on a pretty scenic route, but it was still closed because of the snow, go figure! Thank you for looking, Adrian

Gotcha! We have some of those too (there's a place called Stevenson Hot Springs locally) I've never been there myself but maybe one day!! I envisioned you in a fancy high end hotel getting a massage with flowery smelling oil and having your eyebrows shaped! LOL
Thank the Gods you burst THAT bubble!

Liz: One day you must try the hot springs in the Wind River! The river needs to be low since the springs are IN the river. They are maybe 100 yds up river from the bridge. Park close to the bridge, and walk done to the river, and go upstream on the east side of the river. Not as upscale as a spa, but much more natural! Woody

Great pics there Adrian! Beautiful country. I had visions of you with mud all over you and cucumbers on your eyes when you said spa, I was going to ask the same question.
Thanks for the pics..............Tony

Liz, Tony ... LOL! Could you really picture me covered in mud, with cucumber slices on the eyes and with the eyebrows shaped?? I can't, only if the mud comes from a muddy rockhounding area, and if the slices are agate, not cucumber. ;D

Looks like a wonderful trip. Love the ruins. And how great to have your wife and daughter join you on a hunt.
Now, about those rocks. Any of those pet wood? Is agate blue? And those three dendritic rocks at 9 o'clock are awesome looking. Are those agate?

I'd take a haul like that any day over sitting in hot water stewing in my own filth! Add Dean Cain in there and the odds are pretty even!

Really love your field trip reports Adrian! Ours is such a young country it's always neat to see pics of yours with all it's long history of civilization and all the neat ruins. And all that green foliage and water is spectacular too. We're bone dry and half our state is on fire now. Must be nice to live wheres some rain falls. All that natural beauty and a nice load of rocks too. That's very cool!.....Mel

Thank you everyone!
Matt, that dendritic rock is only a sort of sort sandy rock, and the dendrites are not developed in depth, but only at the surface. So it's not polishable. If it would had been agate, it would had been the king of the haul. And no, no pet wood this time, only agate in rhiolite. in ffact that's the predominant rock in that rockhounding spot.
Mel, thank you, but I'm convinced that the desertic landscape has its charm, too. Besides, we have here a humid heat, which is more unbearable than the dry heat.

Beautiful scenary and great haul Adrian! I always like seeing photos of the rural towns you visit. Wonderfu countryside, even better because it has rocks! That big one you found is really nice. I like those colors. Great bunch of rocks there. Those ruins are fascinating too. Those rings of stone remind me of stonehedge a little. All the foundations are so interesting, and the remains seem to have held up very well over time. It easy to picture what used to be there. I'll check out the link and know for sure ;D
Thanks for posting the photos. Looks like a relaxing and rock filled vacation. Oh, I like the waders too! Good idea. Steve
