I finally got the nerve to work some of this! I wasn't too sure how to work it or how much I could grind off so I worked with surface stuff. Turned out great! I think the matrix is ironstony - it looks hematity! (my new words) These were from one small slabbette - the largest one is about the size of my thumbnail - I took lots of pictures, some show the shape, others the color flash. This one I really like even though there's a big gaping hole in it - I was wondering if I should fill it up with E6000 or something or leave it (I was pondering taking the dremel to it but it goes through the stone... (any suggestions - leave it, cut it out?) Full shot - gaping hole & all 2 more of the color flash - front - the bottom opal has a great orange color flash which is why I wanted to keep the hole - to keep the orange Back This one is smaller - the shine is blinding (take my word for it!) can you see "Shrek"? This is a much smaller piece - I rounded this one out - it has amazing shine and the colors are awesome I think I'm addicted ;D - I'll be dreaming of these color flashes all night! However, I have a few nodules that will need to be cut into, I have no idea which way to cut them - surprise maybe? Thanks for looking

Those colors are beautiful! I wouldn't worry about the hole - lots of people leave the vugs in their cabs & it often makes them even more interesting.

Tweet! I'm so happy for you. Addicted to opal... what a great way to be. There are some draw backs... but they can be dulled, or ignored, with more opal Ever increasing amounts of opal. Enjoy the night time flashes.. they are harmless. The ones to watch for are when you are driving, or crossing the street Thinking opal while operating heavy machinery is scary!! That is some great material and you did real good with it!! I'd like to see a sun lit pic of those. Until Jade Tony or Ed can chime in... I'd say one of opals draw backs I've found is those pits. Mostly they won't sand out, and often get bigger if you try. I'm too new to my own addiction to be to willing to cut out pits, and sand patches, so if it is some great material like you have, I always try to fill it and sand it out. I haven't had a lot of luck though as I get a much better shine on the opal than the glues I've tried. I think as I get more jaded with my addiction I'll start cutting out vugs and rough spots even if I have to sacrifice some of those wonder colors and flashes... I'm not there yet though. When I first worked the opal I was using 600 and 1200 wheels and just scratching the surface real slow at 1150 rpm. Now I get in there with a 120 or 220 hard wheel at 1700 plus, and grind away, but I always check a lot. I have a squirt bottle handy to spray away that wonderful, healing Aussy mud, and watch the color areas carefully so I don't grind away something great. As far as cutting I try to grind some on all the faces so I can see what I'm loosing before I start slicing... but that may not be the best thing. I have two golf ball sized hunks sitting by my saw that are wonderful on all sides and I can't make myself cut into them because some of the flash and color will be lost for all time I suspect when I have exhausted my supply (my dealer is in Australia mining and won't be back for a while) and the opal Jones is nagging at me, I'll cut them quick enough. We'll see Happy for you Tweet! T

Great job. When I get a vug like that and can't see a way to grind it out; I put it aside. I have a few that I want to grind around the area with a round dremel point and then glue another stone in its place. I think I might finally give that a try in the next couple weeks.

Those are great Tweet. I have some BO but nothing as pretty, or expensive, as that. You did a fine job on a tough material.
