This is something many of you may have discovered, but it took me 'til recently.Pretty end cuts are something I just used to keep 'cause they were too nice to toss.I'm talking mainly about ones from nodular{rounded} rocks. These are arready half way to being domed. They may need a bit of shaping first.I have found also that, if the stone has pits or other rough spots around the edges ,it helps to take off a thin slice on the end that will be domed-less grinding will be needed.Mike.

Yes Mike, it's a great way to finish off a rock. I agree there's more to grind. Good suggestion to make a small cut on top of the dome.

I've used end cuts to make cabs too. Sometimes you have to grind down a bit to get to good solid rock but it's worth it. There are some gems hidden in those ends!

Adrian did a super job on an end cut (and it was a small end cut!!) Wow, it turned out beautifully. I am sure most of you saw this, but if not...I am going to post his thread here. I renamed it trouterite or troutitella. Turns out it was Montana Agate. But truly, it was a very small piece, and he did an amazing job. So keep those end cuts! They can be priceless. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=ccabs&action=display&thread=23885K
