You know how sea glass looks, because it has been tumbled in sand. Can you tumble glass? I don't mean thin glass, I mean thick glass like off the bottom of a wine bottle.

Sunrisedawn: I hate to burst bubbles, but most sea glass comes out of tumblers, and not the sea unless self collected, so yes, you can tumble glass. If you want old glass colours, get in contact with antique bottle collectors, and ask for broken glass...a broken antique bottle is just broken glass. Woody

I have tumbled glass with great success. It was quick because you don't need to follow the normal process up to the polish stage. What takes mother nature months takes only a couple of weeks through the magic of tumbling - and the results are almost identical. I've used it for many jewelry projects and was thrilled with the result.

Hi Dawn I had a few wine bottles in various colors and broke them in to bite sized pieces, then, I did it just as if I were doing stones - rough grit for the first step until they were rounded enough and no longer shiny. Then, I simply went to the next step grit and that was it - I left them in rough for about 7-10 days, cleaned it and the next step for a week or so.
I don't have any pictures handy, but will see what I can find.

Dawn,
I tumbled some glass from wine bottles a few months back. I wanted them to look like sea glass, actually, so I only put them in with 220 grit for about 10 days. I did a pregrind with the side of my workforce blade, mainly to keep from cutting myself while handling the stuff. Everything came out frosted with rounded edges and looks really cool. I've got about 3 dozen wine bottles in the garage waiting to be cut -- got a project in mind. The key is finding good colored bottles. I cut up a blue bottle from a Riesling and some clear soda bottles, along with real green wine bottle. A bunch of the wine bottles are this yellowish green -- not exactly most people's cup of tea.
I say go for it.

There's plenty of "real" sea glass around here so it's really no big deal but tumbled to a shine, well that's something!
