Hi folks. I'm a rookie at cabbing. All I have is an 8" flat lap. I do ok up until the finer grind stages. I keep ending up with little flat spots on the dome. I move the cab in the "sweeping J" motion but still can't get it right. I grind all the way down to 8000 grit. (It's all I have) Besides more practice is their something I can do to help? Thanks

I know exactly what you are talking about. On most cabbing units, the wheels after the grind stage are flexible. Either using a expanding drum and sand paper or diamonds. If I had to use hard wheels all the way through, I doubt I could do any cabs without little flat spots. Does your lap allow you to have a flexible surface you can use under the sanding and polishing grits? That would eliminate the problems with those random little flat spots showing up after the rough grinding. As far as grits go, I usually stop at my 3000 wheel on my Genie.
Hope this helps, Geoff

Originally my grinder came with all diamond wheels and couldn't get rid of those flat spots no matter how fine a wheel I used. The surface is too hard and offers no flexibility. I use an 8 in. flat lap as well. Are you using all diamond metal laps?
I start with a 180 and then a 280 grit diamond metal lap. I switch to 220, 400 and 600 sand paper disks for removing the flat spots and polishing. When I use the sandpaper disks I cushion them by placing an old felt pad underneath or a plastic place mat cut to shape works well. At the 220 stage I can remove all the flat spots and then proceed with the rest of the disks. Up till now I was using cerium or tin oxide on felt to polish. I was advised by Stoner to switch over to leather laps and diamond paste. Can't comment on that, haven't tried it yet. It must work because he certainly posts beautiful cabs

Hope this helps, it seems to work for me

That" a great idea. I can rig up some cushioning to use. Thank you very much.
