Here it goes.
I hitched a ride with Tony Funk this time (catmandewe). We arrived in Oregon on Thursday evening 6/26. from the looks of the terrain, everything looked like we were off to a great rockhounding experience.
The first people from the forum (RTH) we met were Scott and Mike here is a picture of all of us at Walton Lake
After settling in at Walton Lake we were off to try to find the illusive Oregon Rocks and T-eggs;D
In short, rockhounding in Oregon was a bit challenging. Not only were the rockhounding locations spread out (Hampton Butte was about 1.5 hour drive) but the collection was a bit poor.
(The RTH guide that was supposed to meet us had a few problems of his own, and could not free up time to show us around.
So, we decided to strike it on our own. However, everywhere we went, we did not have as much luck as we through we would have. We kept finding stuff but kept throwing them off, cause we did not think the finds were keepers. ;D
I guess we are used to the real big stuff here in Utah and Idaho.
Anyhow...after an exhausting search throughout Oregon, we stumbled upon a rock oasis (Elkins Gems Rockshop)...after that, our
morale improved!! We ended up spending most of Saturday at the store...and what an experience it was.
Tony looked quite exhausted after picking up more than 7 buckets at Ekins.
And here are some of the finds from Elkins and Tony's backyard:
plume agate (graveyard point)
the only good find of the entire trip (found by my 6 year old son at hampton Butte)
Some of our rock finds from Elkins
Slabs galore at Elkins...
Here is a picture of tony, josh and me at Graveyard point
I think for our next trip to Oregon, we are planning a trip straight to Elkins and we are camping out in the back yard for a week. ;D ;Dack yard for a week. ;D ;D (just kiddding!!!) actually the country in Prineville was beutifull, the sights were amazing and the whole experience was great.
