finally found a little time to try out my little homemade cabbing machine...still havent got the water system on it yet...so it was grind a second and dip the stone....and throw water on the wheels....these wheels are worn and giving to me by another. this is my first attempt at a cab...and doing it by hand...so keep that in mind. ;D heres the problem....it might not look like it in the pic...but the bottom bevel and the very bottom of the jasper is all that will actually take a good wet shine...the rest of the peice is a little shiney...but nothing like the bottom bevel at all...its a major difference between them. i have backed up the stages 3 times trying to get the rest of the stone to shine like the bottom....no go. i still have a couple of pits to work out of the face of it...i wasnt going to put much more in it if i cant make the shine match...ive spent 3 durn hours on the thing already ;D....any ideas...kev. click

If you hadn't told me it was a first, I wouldna known. The problem with the shine is that it is a flat - very hard to get nice & shined up. You have to hold the stone against the wheel & move it back & forth so all the surface gets in contact with the wheel - you didn,t mention what size wheel (or flat lap) you were using - Sands has the flats down pat - but they're really hard to get nice,
But I think you did a great job - I like the shape too

I like the shape; I think tweet is right the large flat areas are near impossible to get a super shine on with a wheel. You would need a flat lap for a large flat area.

Yep looks like ya got a flat spot to me. They are a bugger to get a shine on.

It seems you tried to do a cab with a big flat surface, a sort of "cabojohn" that Sandsman does. I find them very difficult to polish, a domed surface is much easier to polish. try to shape a narrow dome on that flat surface and then you'll get the shine everywhere. Also look on the link below at the great tip that Vance - freeforms shared with us : forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=tips&thread=24131&page=1Adrian PS. Beautiful shape and pattern! PPS. Could we have a look at your homemade cabbing machine, please?

Hi cpdad, the time you have spent on it shows. the bevel is even as I can see. Flat is tough to get right. From what you said the process was you did a phenomenal job on it.
If it were me I would lay it aside if you are not happy with the way it is right now, do a few more flat backs and one day a light will come on and you will be able to finish it the way you want it to be.
Rotation on the wheel is key and if you have to keep stopping to dip and wet the wheel that makes it that much more hard. Don't give up you have a great cab there.

nope....no cabojohn at all...i wouldnt even think of that style....thats sands deal ;D....whats hard to see is there is 2 angles...i dont take good pics.....i need to get 1 from the side ;D.
the side angles are the same as the bottom angles....why the sides wont take a polish....i dont know...i did nothing no diff.
i only dusted the face....i was to concerned about not getting a polish on the sides of the stone....i kinda forgot about the face of it ;D.
the pits should come out easily....just dont know if i can shine it up ;D
adrian....i will try to find the link to my machine i was building.....i finally used the darn thing ;D....kev.

Hey Kev, what type of stone is it? I think Mark has the right idea, just put it aside and grab an agate and work on that. If you don't get an agate to shine, then it's something you're doing wrong. But looking at your first cab, I'd say you're doing everything right, probably just one of those stones that won't take an even shine.

ok...doing what yaw suggested...i cut a couple of pieces earlier....1 is a trusty brazillian...then the rain set in....i didnt want to go and get executed or nutting...i will try it tommorow. could i be cross contaminating the wheels since i dont have water running on them to wash away the grit? tweet.... they are 4 inch used diamond wheels. adrian....heres a link to it....i have everything to finish it on hand...just hard to find time at the moment...kev. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=Pictures&action=display&thread=13550

once again thanks all....i went and goofed around with an agate and a piece of blue tigers eye....both took a nice shine ;D...still a few minor scratches when looking at them with a magnifying glass...but over all ok shine....much better than the jasper piece.
i just tried to polish something...not actually make anything ;D....i should have put half of this in the tips section for my questions...sorry about that ;D.....kev.

I tried that too, now it seems there's no satisfying me, they all look scratched up to me - *throws out magnifying glass so's to have nicer cabs in my head*

Kevin - I had a piece of Owyhee that had the same problem. I knew in my mind that it should take a shine...it just wasn't. I kept coming back to it over and over trying different tricks. It wasn't until I was using wheels all the way through 14k that it finally took a shine. Prior to that I was using diamond paste on resin from 1200 and up.
The shine still isn't as nice as some of my others, but it at least shines now! I do love the shape and placement on that stone!
