no joke....i looked out the window and there was a young dude with a considerably sized hammer and an old guy with a cane. my first thought was "OMG>>>HOME INVASION SCAM" , but the old guy introduced himself as a geologist and could he please send his student down to get a rock sample from our creek . i was a bit less than friendly at first, being the old gruss-pot that i am , but quickly got to like the old buzzard and when he found out i was a "rock person", well, you know how that goes ;D ;D ;D. Turns out he is a Canadian geologist that has a grant to survey the area for one of the New York State Energy affliates.... i very proudly showed him my Patagonian agate half and went on to show him some slabs and cabs and jewelry. even the kid, er...student, was impressed that they chanced upon a lapidary in their travels and they walked out of here with $80 of my stuff...!!!!!! nice way to end the afternoon! i think if the deer flies hadn't been so bad they would have stayed even longer. i think if i'd invited them inside, they'd still be here..........!!! was pretty cool, actually! That sounds like a fun surprise. Like Kev, I would have had about 1000 questions for the guy!

the creek bed is mainly shale with large granite boulders that have traveled down with the spring run offs. he called it "Utica Shale" (Utica being the larger city to our south).
and yeh, after they left, i thought i should have invited them in, put a few more potatoes in the pot and offered them dinner.
