I'm hoping all you rock hounds can help me identify this rock. I got it when I was up at the Ace of Diamonds mine in Herkimer, NY. A big vein of it ran through one of the fields behind the main digging area. I picked up about 50 lbs of it. I'm thinking maybe flint? The colors vary quite a bit. Most of what I picked up has more purple/pink than this piece does. The greenish stuff on the left side is very soft. The rock is fracture-y, but not unmanageable. Any ideas?

I did a bit of digging (haha) and found that Dolomite is the basic rock in which the Herkimer Diamonds are found - imbedded in- The name Dolomite can refer to both the mineral and the rock itself. The rock can have a number of minerals in it and I believe that Dolomite is or can be pinkish in color. This is a great geological link that explains it. Specifically the section "Archeological History" www.herkimerdiamond.com/History08.htmThis link is for info on the mineral.: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DolomiteYou always come up with something interesting when you dig. Ace of diamond mine & herkimer diamond mine would be in the same geological area so I think the base stone and sediment would be the same.

This stuff isn't anywhere near as hard as dolomite. It breaks pretty easily with a hammer...dolomite doesn't, as my blisters from that day would attest to! Maybe it's some sort of vein of something else mixed with dolomite? I haven't tried to cab any yet, to see if there is any undercutting or differing hardnesses throughout. Besides that soft light lime-colored stuff, the rest seemed to cut pretty uniformly.

I've got a piece of Churt that looks like that stuff, and it breaks easy too. I don't know if churt comes from the area you found your rock but my piece of churt sure looks similar.
