If you are up for a couple hour drive, each way, you could head to Bancroft Ontario. It's one of the rockhounding meccas in North America. You can find a zillion different kinds of rocks in the area, and if you do an online search you will find sites that list directions to about 20 or more free collecting areas, plus some where you pay a small fee. The princess sodalite mine is near Bancroft, though I'm not sure if you can collect or buy from that mine.
Also, each August, Bancroft holds their annual "Gemboree", where for a week or so you get lots of dealers in town selling rough, etc. Never been there myself, but it's always been on my wish list. -Don
