I was out searching around on Grainger.com and found they have Aluminum Oxide in 36 and 80 grit for less than I can buy Silicon carbide in the same grid. Would Aluminum Oxide 80 grit perform the same way as 60-90 grit Silicon Carbide?
Just looking for a cheaper deal on 60/90 grit. I go through 50 lbs in 3-4 months...

Not much difference in hardness -- aluminum oxide is corundum, which defines Mohs hardness 9. The difference is that aluminum oxide becomes smooth as it wears down so becomes like tiny ball bearings. SiC is brittle so breaks into jagged shards as it wears down, so it keeps cutting much longer than AlO. -Don

Thanks Don,
That was the answer I was looking for. Looks like I best stick to Silicon Carbide for my 1st stage tumbling...
