We stayed in a hotel outside Chicago on the way to the agate show in Wisconsin. Just happened to see a pamphlet in the lobby for this Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art . . . cool!! And it’s only seven miles away, right on the way to the Gem Shop and the World of Agates Show. If you’re anywhere near Chicago, you have to go see this place. Absolutely incredible!! There’s more awesome rock work than I’ve ever seen in one place. Stone mosaics and intarsia, carved animals set in dioramas, ivory, faceted gemstones, snuff bottles carved from gem stones and rocks, agate cameos, and enough carved jade for a couple of imperial palaces. And most of this was done long before electricity and diamond wheels!! www.lizzadromuseum.org/jfl.htmlAgate fish 6” - 7” tall (there’s a whole school of ‘em in this diorama) Agate flower w/druzy 8” – 9” tall Intarsia box w/malachite, rhodocrosite, sugilite, turquoise, jade, copper ore, lakers, datolite, opalized palm wood, 18k gold Japanese ivory carving ~16” tall Chinese coral carving ~12” Carved bowls – agate, rose quartz and ruby in zoisite Stone mosaic tabletop ~2’ x 3’ Florentine mosaic/pietra dura. The glass looks to be a piece of quartz, and you can see her hand behind it!! Jade stork Ivory carving. The sphere at the top has about six more spheres carved inside it, all able to turn inside each other.

This museum is amazing! Thank you for sharing the pics. The Fkorentine picture really is a work of art, I couldn't believe it's not painted but made of rocks!

Akansan – Hard to tell on these wonders, the joints are about invisible. You can assume there’s one between really contrasting rock types, but the subtle shadings . . . who knows? There’s another one, a commissioned portrait of Joseph Lizzadro, that has over 1300 pieces!! And it’s one of the simpler ones on exhibit. Small pic: www.lizzadromuseum.org/mosaics.htmlThe one that amazed me the most, my pic is out of focus. Kind of a landscape of Roman ruins, with trees and foliage. I studied it closely and couldn’t see a single joint in the building blocks or the red and green on the tree, or anywhere for that matter. Just unbelievable!!! Their could be 10,000 pieces in this one, for all I know, and a lot of ‘em gotta be almost microscopic. (Damn!!! I just remembered I had my loupe in my bag all along.) Here’s that crummy pic anyway. Amazing - can you imagine how long it must take to find that one rock that will give you the exact shading you want?

My favorite is that Intarsia box. I would love to see it in person.
