Just felt like adding a couple pics of future tumbles. This first material is Llanite, from Texas. I bought the rough about a year and a half ago in Tucson, and finally got around to busting it up to tumble-size pieces yesterday. No fracture planes in this stuff, so major pounding on a chisel needed! It's a mixed hardness material, so I'm not sure how well it will tumble, but there's one way to find out. ;D Dry rough (pretty dull-looking): After the magic of water-misting: And a bit closer to show the pattern and blue crystals: And then my personal addiction, Ocean Jasper. I haven't bought much of anything on ebay for awhile now, but just couldn't resist this. Dry rough: Wet, and shown closer:

Well Don, if anyone can tumble Llanite you will be the one to do it. It has a lot of soft and hard material mixed together. The blue agate is especially hard compared to the rest of the stone. I tried to vibe some one time and got terrible results. I'm looking forward to seeing your finished product. Good luck and don't forget to post them when finished.

Llanite. How is that word pronounced? In Spanish two lls together are pronounced similar to the letter y. Whatever the case they look like they're going to come out great.

I've gotten a couple small pieces of llanite through a tumble, even got some shine. But Curt is right, some pieces will grind up to nothing in a heartbeat while others will maintain themselves. Several pieces I had in a mixed batch held on until the prepolish stage, then fractured or developed big pits. The blue quartz crystals are gorgeous, though. I bet the trick is to tumble llanite by itself. And, as others have remarked, if anyone can get a great shine, it will be you, Don.
Looking forward to your results.

Wow I really want to see your go at llanoite. Our new place is not far from LLano so I should be able to get over there and find some pretty easy. KInd of like granite though so I think it might be problematic. Man, that is one swell batch of OJ too. That should tumble up awesome!!!!
Condor: I was saying Llano as Yano first time I went back and was informed Texans say Llano with an ahhh sound lahhhhno *L* Mel

Can't wait to see them, Don. That OJ tumble will be terrific!
Interesting about the lahhhno, Mel. In my mind, I've always pronounced this material Yanite rather than Lanite. But then again, you always have Llamas... ;D

Okay, you've all spooked me about the Laaahhhnooo ;D, but also made me curious, so I think I'll start that tumbling soon. No harm in trying.
And Mel, if you are still reading this thread, I've been working on a batch of your PJ for the past few months. Only a few stragglers still remain to finish up in coarse grind. Yah, it's a long process.

This is going to be a FUN experience following along on your tumbles...as if it's ever dull looking at your tumbles!!! I have seen pix of llanite before and the final polished stones were beautiful, so I hope you have wonderful luck with those stones - however they are pronounced!! ;D As for the Ocean Jaspers...I am going to stockpile my napkins now so I'll be ready for the final drool-worthy pix and I'm going to let my good Tumble-Buddy Harry know about this adventure. You and Harry, Don, are the Kings of Ocean Jasper! ( Harry has some OJ beauties posted elsewhere on the Internet). I have some that I am working up the nerve to tumble. Guess I need to get brave and just get started. Thanks for giving us the before pix and for whetting our appetites! YUM!!!! Lady B

Nice! I just got some ocean jasper rough from either the Rock Shed or Great Rough (can't remember which atm. I ordered stuff from both recently.) and I can't WAIT to tumble it Making mental note to do the before and after pix bit.

Hey Don, I finished my most recent batch of OJ's just last week, so you can imagine my excitment when I was told about this thread. After being pointed in this direction by a very dear friend, I'm really pleased I looked in to see your forthcoming tumble batches. I've never come across the Llanite material before, but the patterns look like fun, and the colour is quite intriguing. I shall be very interested to see what sort of a result you get from these stones. It promises to be a very interesting batch, I'll look forward to seeing how you get on. Of course I was directed here as I too have an addiction to Ocean Jasper, and that batch of rough looks super delicious. I have rarely seen such a contrasting and appealing batch of rough OJ's ready for the magic to begin. I have to say I'm going to be very excited to see the result you get from this lot. Did you say it was purchased from Ebay? The colour pallet is really bright for a batch of rough bought in such form. I wish I was that lucky with my OJ orders! From one OJaHolic to another - GOOD LUCK! And thanks for sharing! Cheers, H

Any way you can share the name of the eBay seller you got the OJ from? I'd love some of that.

Ah, Mr. H., good to see you around again!! I haven't checked that other site in quite awhile, but if you've got some OJ posted there I should go and give it a lookover.
Roan, I got the OJ from a seller called Gems24. Always had excellent transactions with him. He periodically lists parcels of rough, moreso recently I think, and the OJ is often in 3 lb lots like this. The final auction price varies quite a bit, no surprise there. I got mine for about $34, which is probably the lowest price of his batches over the past couple months. His last 3 lb. batch went for $134, the highest over that time, and far out of my price range.

Thanks, Don!
I checked out his auctions and he has some *really* nice stuff. He has a batch of that OJ up right now, too.
