I'm heading up to Herkimer next week for two days with my daughter. We are planning on spending at least part of two days at the mine. Any tips for the mines or interesting things in the area? Thanks.

here is a link to a place that is located right across from the Thruway exit. it has tons of info, restaurant, rest rooms and a fabulous store of stuff made locally. i believe they also run canal cruises from there. a good place to gather info! www.gemsalongmohawk.com/KD

We made up a trip up in May. Ended up at the Ace of Diamonds mine. We got maybe 10 really nice crystals, all pretty small. Be prepared for a hard day of work. Cracking dolomite is HARD. My hubby worked at the bigger rocks with a full-sized sledgehammer. I worked with a 5 lb short sledgehammer. There were lots of rocks I'd have to hand off because I just couldn't open them.
It was fun, though.

Pay the $1500 or so to them open a pocket for you Take everything that you would on any rock run. I know the Ace of Diamonds rock wall faces South..makes it a hot day...bring plenty of water and sun block.

Oh, cold chisels become your friend, too. Be sure to bring a couple along.
