Hello, I have been on the site for a few weeks now so I thought it was time to introduce myself. I live on the Isle of Bute in Scotland U.K, lots and lots of quartz but not a lot else here on the island. Thankfully I am not too far from some of the Scottish agate locations in the west of Scotland. Since joining the site I have been reading many of the posts relating to vibrating tumblers. I have recently bought one and I am now on my second batch of stones. The first batch was ok but nothing to write home about, I used to get better results with my rotary tumbler that I still use for the rough 80 grit stage. I am just at the final polish stage on this second batch and I remembered reading somewhere that it was an idea to add leather pieces to act as buffers. I can't remember where I saw the item, I thought it was on this site but I now can't find it. Anyway I have added a number of small bits of leather and apart from soaking up any water or dampness and the cerium oxide, they don’t appear to be doing much. They are sticking to the sides of the bowl and just seem to be stopping or seriously slowing down any vibrating action. Has anyone heard of or tried this idea?

Scotland is a beautiful place! I was there on the west coast in the mid 1960's when I was in the Navy. Unfortunately I didn't get any time to rockhound. Some of the agate jewelry from Scotland that was popular many years ago is particularly stunning. Do you know if any of this material has been found lately? Bob

Try using non-abrasive ceramic cylinders instead of leather. Welcome to the board. I have a brother-in law from Scotland. I won't hold that against you though.

*sigh*
I wish I were in Scotland...I envy all that live there or have visited.
Husband refuses to go there or Ireland. What does he know? He's a dang wop!! LOL Guess I'll have to put that on MY "bucket list".
Welcome to lens!
