I recently went to Java Island and walked around the peak of the volcano Tangkubang Perahu, which is above the city of Bandung. Although I had seen obsidian at the Geological Museum in Bandung labeled as from this area of Java, local rock vendors said there was no obsidian to be found in the area. (There is plenty of pumice to be found lying along the paths around the crater, though.) The vendor showed me this geode, though, and I bought it because the two pieces fit together so well: When you look inside, you can see a clear crystal (hexagonal?) with a purplish tone: To give you a better idea what the crystal is like, here's a close up of the smaller piece of the geode: So now for the question... can anyone tell me what the crystal is? I was so busy asking the vendor about obsidian that I totally forgot to ask him what I was buying! Thanks for any help... smadelinker

With the purple tinge to it I would say that is is a light amethyst geode you found. Tami
