First of all...THANKS WOODY! ;D
I just got back home from working in Washington. We were working in Moses Lake on a Lowes, and fortunately, it's about an hour away from Saddle Mountain petrified wood. I had no idea, but luckily, Woody PM'd me directions to the site, and I'm very glad and grateful he did.
We actually had a little time to do some rockhunting on Sunday. After we worked a few hours, we called it the day, and decided to head up to see if we could find anything. It's a nice drive to the area, as you pass one of Washington's finest fruit growing areas. Apple Orchards, Vineyards, all sorts of different stuff..and you do drive along the Colombia river for a little while. We arrived to the place without a hitch, and Woody gave us perfect directions. The hills were sage brush and barren; and I was thinking no way is this the area.
Remember the bear who wanted to see what it was like on the other side....Well....what do you think of this GORGEOUS VIEW!
I think I liked the bears thoughts! This is the Colombia river below and the fruit orchards below. It was a Beautiful View, and even if we hadn't found any wood...this would have been worth it.
After parking and walking around a little while, we started finding bits and pieces of pet Wood and started seeing the pits that others have dug wood out of. Woody told us to look for these pits in the ash layer, and there we would find wood. We spent about 4 hours walking and digging and we found success. I was digging this one particular spot, and dug up some roots or limbs. That was totally exciting for me, as I've never found anything perfectly round like these limbs. All the wood is highly agatized and very pretty I cannot wait to slice some and do a few cabs! I think I even hooked another co-worker. ;D
I didn't take any pics out in the field of our finds. I was on limited time. But here's the lot of Wood that I brought home. notice the limbs or roots to the right.
The roots or limbs. Some are doubles!
A couple nice pieces. Can't wait to do some cabbing.
A larger piece....Beautiful Colors!
I didn't find my yard piece I was hoping for, but I know if I would have had more time, I no doubt would have. Heck..I didn't even have a shovel. I was like a turtle digging with both my flippers!!
Thanks again Woody for being kind enough to take the time to pm me directions.
