I have a nice piece of obsidian I would like to make into an obelisk so will need to cut sloping sides. My saw has a horizontal vise. I get that I'll have to angle the rock in the vise, but that will mean the piece won't have nice flat ends for holding.Use wedges?Rig something to provide downpressure?Help please.Mike.

Hey Mike, There is a slab grabber that is adjustable, mostly used for making sphere blanks. If you could get ahold of one of those you could hold your stone in any position you desired. (I saw one on ebay last month to show you, but I cannot find it now). Maybe you can find it from someone who specializes in shpere blanks or something.
Good luck.....................Tony

I made an obelisk a few years ago and I hand held the piece and cut it on a 7" trim saw. The rough was about 1 1/2" on a side and about 6" tall. I seemed to work OK for me. Bob
