Collected last month in South Dakota in one day of collecting on a road trip (2 sites). We have prairie agate, petrified wood, rose quartz, two Fairburn agates that I am sure of (2 or 3 others are possibles, I believe), bubblegum agate, and probably some jasper represented here. I didn't grind the Fairburns and wannabees as round and smooth as I do with other rocks, since the preferred method for Fairburns is to leave them in their natural state. However, with the lower grade Fairburns or fragments of one, some degree of tumbling and polishing brings out the pattern better. Thanks for looking! I love Badlands rocks.

What a varied mix. They're all so nice, plus I like the general name for them...Badland Rocks. Hmmm, maybe this will be a name for a newbie on this board.

Wow! I can't wait to do some "home grown" rocks myself! I don't know where to go to find something that beautiful though, lol. I am going to see if the local rock quarry will let me walk through or not. It is fenced in...

What a great batch! Wow! I am missing the badlands.... used to live there, before I knew about cool rocks. We just had fun with scoria (sp?) on the sidewalks.

I LOVE collecting there. Yeah, it is true that the well-known spots are overcollected -- of course, following those tire tracks helps you find them. Even so, you can see that just an afternoon there can be really productive -- this is only a small fraction of what we picked up. I do admit, of course, that anything small and especially nice was first into the barrels, so the quality does drop off some. I would love to find a really nice Fairburn agate, but the chances of that happening are pretty small. But still -- there's plenty of nice stuff there anyhow. No digging required, either -- unless you happened to find a log or something, which for sure could happen. Karen, I am sad for you! Have you ever gone out looking for Nebraska Fairburn agates? Unfortunately, the pretty yellow one in the fourth picture has a big fracture right across the middle which is more visible on the back. I'm afraid it would fall apart if I tumble it any more and it is better to keep the face intact -- also they tell me it is possible that the pattern doesn't go all the way through and might be on the surface only.

Please see the "Trips and Shows" forum. There's been an effort to have an RTH trip there in September and a couple of us are still interested although unfortunately, many have had to drop out, so at this point it has evidently died. I'm still shamelessly promoting it.

Thanks again for the compliments and once again, I love rocking in the badlands. We are really bummed that the RTH gathering planned for September has so much been the victim of the economy and gas prices. Nothing could have kept me away. Meanwhile, I'm continuing to get badlands rocks out of rough grind and the colors and patterns are always amazing. Who knows whether we will ever have an RTH member with the handle "badlandsrocks," but I named my new puppy Fairburn.

Hey, I just bumped this up for comparison with Hardrockcafe's SD trip rocks. According to Shawn's look at photos of them before tumbling, I've got 2 Fairburns, the ones in the close ups in #3 and #4. I don't totally agree that they are the only ones, though. For instance, look at the very red looking smaller one to the left of the large one in #4.
