Here is my first successful tumble. It is self collected Amazonite from the Morefield mine in VA. The Sodalite was a gift from my son.

It looks like some of the Sodalite has that dark blue/purple color. My favorite stone and my favorite color of that stone. ;D

Great shine on these tumbles. I'm partial to the Amazonite. Looking forward to many more posts from you.

Hi Tom, It's me, you and Roan in the Herndon, Reston area. I always thought I was alone here for my love of rocks but now I know I'm not. I am hoping that Morefield will reopen next spring. Sam and Sharon are trying to sell the mine and they want to retire. They said they would make a decision by September and post it on their web site. I can only keep my fingers crossed (when I am not holding rocks) and hope they will be returning. I think they do private groups/school class trips and scouts working on badges when you set it up ahead of time though. Right now, I think they are still in Florida for a few more weeks.

Fran,
Have you ever gone into the Blue Ridge to look for garnets? From the geological maps I've seen there are some along that new Bull Run development sunk in the side of the mountain on 15 in Loundon Co.
Other than that and the Manassas mine, I think all we find around here is shale, shale and alunite.
The barn owner where I board my horse gave me permission to fire up my metal detector, so I'm going to go tooting around her 20 acre pasture and see what I can find. Her place has been in her family for generations and there were a few skirmishes fought during the Civil war on her property. I've found some decent milky quartz in that pasture, too.
