.... on this RIQ (Rock In Question). Found it on a walk in central CA - could have been a piece of landscaping rock. Whatever it is, I had to bring it home (much to the SO's chagrin). I'd love to know what it is, though. Size-wise, it's a little larger than my palm/fist. I have a feeling this is only the first of many "what the heck is this" posts for me. Good thing y'all are so nice. ;D Nancy p.s. and while I'm editing away here - does anyone have any recommendations for a good book/field guide for identification of rocks/minerals? Should I look for something particular to my geographic region to begin with? Any guidance much appreciated.

By the sedimentation layer`s and the fine grain of clay silt`s.
The Factorize surface of the stone. Look`s like a hardness of 6.8-6.95.
Agatized material JASPER Sediment Mud. though it appears it formed in a pocket or vug a hollow space.
Now their is the other side of the coin.............
A very nice agate of the Onyx formation, meaning Layer on layer.
Some people still today refer to the name onyx as a stone type.
3000 years ago they had it right, though less then a hundred years ago a Jeweler, Printed the name Black Onyx.
Sardonyx,
Jack

I pretty much agree with Jack, typical Franciscan formation jasper ( actually a chert as most is of marine origin). Used to find lots of similar material around Niles, CA when I was a kid but it occurs in many colors and patterns throughout the Franciscan deposits everywhere from Ventura County in southern Calif. to Washington state....Mel
