Took a "field trip" yesterday to Moonstone Beach, in central California. Really beautiful beach - I'd never been there before. Sections of the beach are sand, and other sections are all rocks/pebbles. I brought a lot of stuff home (duh!) but have a question about one in particular. This is a chunk off a large boulder back against the "cliff" area about 100 feet or so from the high tide line. The pics show the rock bone dry... wetting it didn't help to accentuate the part I'm curious about. That center area that's darker actually has a milky sheen to it when you hold it just right. I had a devil of a time trying to capture it with the camera (and didn't do very well). The larger piece of boulder (left behind) shows this milky looking "center" (mmm - chewy lol) also. What the heck is this stuff? It doesn't look like any moonstone rough I saw googling (hoping to be able to recognize it if I ran across it). Any thoughts? I did read somewhere online that there were moonstone boulders to 100lbs in this area - but boulders tend to be secretive things about what they're hiding inside... IF it's moonstone - what can I do to get rid of the matrix (?)? If it's not... what might it be? I hammered apart a few pieces but they all look pretty much the same, that crust surrounding a darker center that has the sheen on it. More pics in another post... Nancy

Really? What could the milky appearance of that center area be? A light deposit of a marine something or other? I guess the garden has another few bits of rock coming!
