Here are a few more pictures from my "haul" at Moonstone Beach, CA yesterday. Anyone wishing to identify any of these is most welcome - I only know what the piece of jade is! LOL Here goes: Bluish one: Back of the bluish one: A b&w one: I'd really love to know what these gorgeous goldish pieces are! Looks way different than the jades Possibly serpentine: (same stone) This lovely chunk of (something or other!) is the size of a smallish egg: Moonstone? Probably chalcedony: Some Pinkies: And a cool yellow-y one! My jade "pebbles" Everything: Th-th-th-that's all folks. Nancy

Neat haul! The brecciated and golden jaspers are Franciscan jasper/chert typical to much of California's coast range deposits. A couple even look to be similar to Stone Canyon Jasper. Lots of quartzite in your groups too. It also looks like you might have some jade pebbles in your group pic but the angular green piece shows conchoidal fracture which would probably make it a quartz mineral like chert or quartzite instead of jade. Jade fracture is more fibrous in nature. There used to me a "moonstone" location up south of Halfmoon Bay but there the "Moonstones" were yellowish chalcedony nodules, not feldspar like real moonstones but were darn pretty anyway. Looks like you may have found a few of those too. Very neat pictures!.....Mel

Yeah, what Mel said. Plus the "looks way different than the jades" looks to me like a serpentine piece.

In your second pic of the "jade pebbles", is there something blue reflecting on the top of the stones? If not, then I would say the ones with the blue flash are moonstone.

...the angular green piece shows conchoidal fracture which would probably make it a quartz mineral like chert or quartzite instead of jade. Jade fracture is more fibrous in nature.... Oh - okay! Thank you. I did notice there was quite a difference in the appearance of the small green pebbles and this larger chunk. But the coloring was so striking, I assumed (yeah, I know about doing that!) it must be jade. So the translucent ones are chalcedony - I just want to know what to properly call them! I'm going to try and find a good rock/mineral identification book this weekend. Thank you for looking!!! Nancy

Oh wow - I didn't see that before. Well, it could be a bit of cool light coming from a window beyond where I was taking the photos - but I'll look more closely at them and see if I can see any flash on those pebbles. Thank you!!! Geez, I'm hopeless. Went back to Moonstone Bch today and brought home about 10x what I did the other day. My S.O. says I can't pick up every stone on the beach - is that true? Has anyone tried?? lol Today's haul has bigger, cooler, and much more interesting pieces (as I learn what to look for!). I promise not to photograph all of them.

Yeah, that's the normal progression. First EVERYTHING is pretty and IT ALL MUST come home . After realizing you can't possibly work through all that came home, most tend to get more selective about what comes home.
