but experience is better shared, especially in here. i'd pulled this bone head maneuver once before, but only for a 24 hour period, you would have thought i could have heard the freaking difference. well, i sorta did........but wrote it off as a new batch of rough. anyway, here is the truth, i rolled a whole seven days in coarse WITH NO WATER. (DUH) how embarrassing is that, huh? the result was (thankfully) no barrel damage tho it was warm-ish. the 60/90 looked like 600 grit and was absolutely PACKED in the bottom. the rocks were very smooth, but had powdered grit embedded like polish before burnish. i had to dig out the caked powder with a spoon and mixing with water, it took a good effort too. i washed the rocks off best i could, recharged (with water this time!!!) and we'll see what they look like in another weeks time....... needless to say i felt like a huge dork. What KD- YOU just did this? OMG Maybe there is hope for the rest of us (this morning I grabbed my coffee warmer at work to see if it was on! Burned the crude outta my finger tips!) Well hopeful all will be well?

Oh no, glad you didn't have any damage. You know, it sounds funny but actually it's something I've worried about before. You get messing with a bunch of barrels and it's like .... Ummmm did I or not? Did I put water in? Did I put the grit in? So far I've been lucky and sure wouldn't want to have to fix a mess like you had. Ooooo speaking of barrels, I have a load washing that I took out of polish this afternoon. I wonder if it washed enough.
Cher
PS .. Stefan, you need to learn to drink your coffee faster, then you don't need a warmer. Or, do like I do, use a covered thermal mug, keeps it warm for a long time. Hope you're not burned to bad.

Sorry to hear what happened KD. Hopefully the batch will turn out OK.
Rose, I'm like you (wondering)... but with me it's loosing count on how many tablespoons I put into the barrel (Kids seem to always distract me when I'm counting, or the phone rings just as I'm loading, or the door bell rings).

KD, I've read several members on the board say they ran dry. What could it hurt? Maybe it gave you a head start. Llanna has done it but never posted on the results. Anyway, it's not unheard of. Keep us psted on the outcome.

Glad I'm not the only one who does things like that. Sure no harm was done, just extra work. Trish

Funny you should mention this. Yesterday I moved one of my 3 lb barrels around and it felt oddly light. I was wondering if there was water in it.
Was a bit too busy at the time to check it closer (If I check one barrel I start checking them all and nothing else gets done) but it's suppose to be finished today so I guess I'll find out soon enough. Would be a bummer since I let it go for 2 weeks in the 120/220 grit.

This is how such technological advances as dry tumbling are discovered.

Hey KD, I've done the dry tumbling several times. It doesn't hurt anything and can actually speed up rough grinding some. Without the water to slow down the rocks falling during the tumble, they hit more agressively. Not something to do with delicate rocks. I found it most effective when I was running that Ruby junk I had. I don't do it often because the mess isn't work any gains. I do save the grit when I do it and use it later as a prepolish. It's kind of odd how well the grit sticks to everything, and I mean everything, in the barrel.
