We are going to fly to KC mid Oct.
Anyone know of some good rock shops there?
Ronda?

My house!!! LOL - seriously, if you're heading this way I would love to have you guys over. I'm technically outside KC, but I'm sure we can figure something out. I've yet to check it out, as I've heard conflicting stories, but there's supposedly a rock shop downtown KC. I've heard it closed, I've heard it's only open from 11-2, I've heard it's only open by invitation...but I've yet to find the actual contact information of the place to find out what's the truth. Until then, I know of a couple good houses to stop at.

Oh goodie, thanks Ronda. I'll PM you when it gets a bit closer. It's gonna be a rush trip, but I can't go somewhere without at least looking at a few rocks. Curt

There are literally ZERO rock shops in Kansas City. I'm in a suburb, Blue Springs, and would love for someone to start one though.
There is a Gem and Mineral show though October 31-November 2. The fall show that I went to last year though by the same company Shows Of Integrity wasn't nearly as good as the spring show this past March for rocks and minerals.
Sorry I don't have better news for you.

Nah, none of those places are really "rock shops" in the usual meaning of the term.
Well, Ace's Gems & Minerals is closed!
The rock shop in Blue Springs is in some guy's basement and is really just his mineral collection. I went there once maybe 7-8 years ago and none of the stuff was even priced or anything, cause I guess he wants you to make an offer and there wasn't like bins of rocks that would be good for tumbling or cabbing or anything, just mineral specimen in little boxes. It's definitely not worth the drive out to Blue Springs if you are going to KC (about 30 minutes).
I've never heard of the other place, Amazing Rocks & Jewelry, but up until about 6 months ago I used to work just a few blocks from where this place is and never heard of any rock shops around. It sounds to me like they probalby have a bunch of loose stones, like finished cabs and faceted stuff, along with jewelry. That's really mostly what Ace was also - they had a few bins of fossils and stuff, but was mostly just loose stones and faceting supplies.
Trust me, there is nothing here in KC that I would consider a normal, rock shop, and I've seen my share of rock shops (good and bad) over the past few years of working, down in Arkansas, up in Minnesota, etc.

That's what I've heard.
Is Ace's the one that was in a basement of a church (or something similar)? If it is, then once upon a time it was an actual rock shop. Friend of mine grew up in downtown KC and used to go to this basement shop that was full of rough rock from "all over the place." Granted, this same friend managed to go to the Bay of Fundy and bring me back calcite...

Oh well, you would think people that use ( Mapmuse ) to advertise would have the since to be honest in the ads.

Is Kansas City still a no go for good rock shops? Mapmuse still lists the following even though they have been debunked in a post above.
Ace's Gems and Minerals
Hutsell's (Blue Springs)
Amazing Rocks and Jewelry
As an aside, anything good between Kansas City and Des Moines, in Des Moines?

There seems to be enough of us in the KC area that we should all get together one day for coffee and maybe a "show and tell" of some of our favorites. Just a thought. I may need to post this somewhere else. Just a thought.

KC is still a no-go for rock shops. Not sure of anything between KC and Des Moines. I think the only rock shop left "close" is still Ebersole's down in Wichita, and it will eventually either sell all its stock or the building (they'll officially be closed when one of those two things happen). Jayhkr - I'd post that somewhere else to see what sort of response it generates.
