Ive looked at rough several times and did not bite. I have seen some very nice slabs and some great cabs - but they must have come from very top-grade rough.

I have a piece of Binghamite from Minnesota, it almost looks like pet. wood BUT I brought it along with me when I went to Uncle Toms rocks in Owatonna and he told me that the rock had to be cut like tiger eye (with the grain of the rock) otherwise it won't flash at you at all.

yes the man i bought it from said the same thing, he even took a marker and marked the rock how it should be cut......... but you can see that didn't matter. It wasn't cheap either, darn, i wish i didn't bite.grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Sometimes some material develops an undeserved good (or bad) reputation that is hard to come to grips with. Even with very careful scrutinization we still get snookered. Bob

Well.. not sure what I'm suppose to be seeing.. never seen Binghmite before... but sorry to hear that it's not what it should be....but if it helps any... I still like the killer pattern in your cuts anyway! they look like they will still make some cool cabs...

I just got some Binghamite myself. It will be a while before I cut it though. I've had differing opinions on the direction of cut. With grain apparently gives better chatoyance; cross grain gives better patterns.
The mine that produced Binghamite has been closed for quite a while. I hooked up with some rockhounds from that area this weekend. One said it was rarer than hen's teeth. Dealers are likely running out of stock and selling low grade.

maybe thats what i got then, a lower grade. I still have a large piece to cut, maybe i will try both directions and then deside which i like better

It looks like you have large quartz areas with random fibers. I would not expect it to look more like those pictures.
You may actually be able to get something that looks like rutil or saganite in quartz - only it will be whatever the fiber in this stuff is.
