;DYEP! ;D Got a Crazy Idea for a few Christmas presents this year. It has to do with Butterflies, Picture Boxes, and Flowers,(which I've got all weekend to come up with some patterns) Here's 4 that I cut tonight...starting with the 1st one. These were cut and semi-ground on the Genie. I'm gonna throw them into the tumbler and see what happens. I think they'll actually turn out okay. As you can see...I hadn't quite got it down. This is a Bot, and they are back to back slices. It's amazing how much change can occur in just 1/4". In the next pics..you can see my cuts are better, as well as coordinating. This is #2 Attempt. I tried to get the wings to match a little better, which helped, and decided to try a different body. I'm not so sure. Brazilian wings and Bot body. #3 attempt.(my personal fav) I decided to try the same stone for wings and body. This is a piece of Salina Wonderstone, and I got the wings to match pretty evenly, and switched the body upside down to offset the colors. Last attempt tonight. I could see that I like using the same material for both body and wings....and here's the last change I tried out. This is Maury Mtn. Moss...and from the 1st to last attempt...quite a difference. Any suggestions and feedback; would be very helpful. Thanks for looking. Steve

Steve, those are awesome, but how well will they go together once they're rounded down? have you tried cutting them from one piece?
I really REALLY like the 3rd one - love the color pattern - can,t wait to see them finished

Steve,
These are each a thing of beauty in its own right. #1 has a primitive look by it's very uneveness. Two is delicately pretty with it's soft coloring and I really like the contrasting body - many butterflies have a body color very, very much in contrast to their wings. # 4 shows that practice does get close to perfection. #3 is simply stunning!
Your gifts this Holiday Season will certainly be hits with the lucky recipients!
There are a few folks here at RTH who have worked with specifically-cut shapes. The first to come to mind are Terry664, BuiltonRock, and Cutter. Perhaps they have some tips on how they handled the polishing of their creations that will make your work go quickly and smoothly.
I look forward to seeing more of your beauties - Butterflies have always been among my favorite insects!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments and advise. Tweet...I don't think I'd be able to actually cut these just in one piece. I'm also not sure how well they will fit together aftre being tumbled. I will post pics when I find out though. It may be a few weeks, as I've got a line-up with the tumblers. >: Jack...I hear ya! ;D It seems like my cutting ability and designing gets better after a few drinks too! colliel82...RTH Santa usually comes to a few suprised kiddies here at the RTH Better be good, be nice, no pouting, and mind your parents. He's watching closely!! Thanks again Everyone! Steve

Steve, those are breathtaking! If you are shaping each wing and body separately and not as one unit, I can see each piece delicately wraped and hanging together on a silver stand. They are just Beautiful!

way to go, Steve! i tried some in one piece and put them in the tumbler with mixed results, i think i let them go too long. Terry 664 had better luck a while back with his, i can't find the thread right now, but his came out a lot better than mine did.
yours are looking pretty nice, can't wait to see how you put'em together!

Wow, Steve, it's hard to pick a favorite! I think #3 is really cool, with the bold colors and inverted colors for the body. All are beautiful. You're going to be popular at Christmas!
And besides, you can tell your wife - "I gotta go use my genie, I'm making Christmas presents!"
