I have been cutting cabochons since about 1971-72 when I took a class in Gems and Gem Forming Minerals at the University of Texas. I became so interested in Geology that I made it my minor. I worked as a chemist, and eventually in scientific computing for the Central Research Department of the Dow Chemical Company. After retiring from Dow I taught Geology at a small university in Michigan for one year. My wife and I moved to NC for our retirement. I maintain my own web site that is one of the oldest on the internet about Gems and Minerals. I enjoy photography and use it extensively in my site. I do macro and micro photography (micro-through a microscope). My site is non-commercial and educational only. www.theimage.comI am currently working on a book that I hope to self publish later this year or next year on Agates & Jaspers. It will have several hundred photographs, including micro and macro images as well as a few thin sections. In the last 3 years I have developed my own style of cabochon cutting which is kind of a cross between designed shapes and classic Intarsia. I use Australian Black Jade to frame most of my finished pieces. Here are a few examples: I also facet but not nearly as much as I cab. I am looking forward to sharing information with the various members of this forum.

Thanks all. I have had my site up and operational since about January of 1996. I lost count a long ago of how many hours are invested. It is listed on many school reference sites for geology so I have maintained it as non-commercial. It only gets upgrades about once a year as I only do them when I have a new or revised section to add. Typically I add about 50 to 100 pages all at once when I get them finished. Except for some slabbing, my cutting is also on hold right now, as I am trying to put the finishing touches on a book about Agates and Jaspers. The photos are about 75% complete, but the writing sometimes goes a bit slow. It's often hard to track down where some materials come from. I am still working on getting really "close" closeups of some materials ... eg. Prudentman plume agates with macro lens: with microscope: With macro lens: With Macro lens + filter lens: With microscope: Anyway I love getting in to look at the fine structure of many agates and jaspers, some a pretty wild!
