Well, I'm back from the Silver City, New Mexico rock and gem show and I must say I was sadly disappointed. I hadn't been to it in a few years and it has changed for the worse. The prices were extremely high on all the stuff, and there were very few rocks. It used to be that you could find lots of rough material and slabs. There was a table that had slabs, but they all were from twenty-five dollars per pound and up. They weren't even that nice. There was a table that had some Charoite slabs. I picked up a small piece and the guy told me he'd sell it to me at $10.00. He said it was "on sale." It normally sells for $20.00. Last year at the Deming show I bought a five gallon bucket of Charoite slabs for $70.00. There must have about fifty slabs. Coming back from the show I stopped at the Hatch Chili Festival and there was a dealer there that I've met over the years in Quartzite, and Tucson. He asked me if I'd been to Silver City, then proceeded to say how terrible it now is. Ironic huh? Anyway, the good thing about it all was that the entire three hundred plus round trip was all rainy and cloudy. Just the way I like it.

That is too bad Condor. Unfortunately that is happening more & more at rock shows all over the country. Rock collecting is turning into big business & the days of the mom & pop rockshops & shows with lots of good inexpensive rough are coming to an end in the future. At the shows now, mostly what you'll find is all import jewelry or material that will cost you an arm & a leg. It is sad to see the old ways of rockhounding go by the wayside...

Sad to hear. You could have read my thread on locations and drove up another 2 hours to Belen and collected your own agate, jasper and agatized petrified wood for free. Nothing like free rock. By the sounds of your trip I am glad I did not drive down.
