The August "Rock and Gem" has a review of "Modern Rock Tumbling"---$24.95.It sounds like a very thorough book and even covers vibratory, something I haven't seen elsewhere. They have a new website:www.littleredstore.com or are at littleredstore@gmail.com They will be offering general lapidary supplies,a newsletter and free advice. The book should be great for newbies who could read then look here for additional tips.I'm guessing there would be plenty in it for us old hands too.Mike.

Nahh - theres nothing in a "book" which could ever outshine human interaction. I cant measure it - but the expertise on here would far outshine a book which was published for monetary gain - not that that one was........ who knows LOL The book isnt useless by any means - but can a reader of a "book" ask a question to that "book" and get an answer if the answer is not in that book? NO People are better than books - theres nothing like asking and talking to folk. I lurveeee the WEB! Its people power all the way and its free. Mark.

It might take both. Lots of the info here is people's experiences, but also technical information from books. I have posted about rotation speeds, grit to mesh conversions, polish compositions - all stuff I read in books.

If there was an RTH book, it would sell well on the main site.

Hey - I cant write a book - I dont know half the stuff you guys know, I even struggle to make obsidion shine up. But you know if someone on here wrote one and wanted to sell it on here - then I am certain it would be totally comprehensive and i dont mind if the writer makes a few dollars out of it for their time and effort. Still a reader would have to come back and chat about things though - cant beat that Mark

I agree with Mark. You guys got me started and as we speak I got my first batch going on the first stage! No Book Needed! This site IS a BIG INTERACTIVE BOOK with information that you could never read about IN A "COMMERCIAL" tumbling book. Thanks a lot guys and gals for getting me and my boy into a hobby we BOTH can enjoy on the same level!

Hey,I'm old so I come from a time when people actually read books. This site wasn't available when I started so books were useful. Certainly I have learned a great deal here."Genius 'round the world stands hand in hand and one shock of recognition runs the whole circle round."Melville. Mike.

Yeah, I remember suggesting a "Member Articles" section and then having experienced members volunteer to collectively author a book... but then I got busy again and the idea sort of fell by the wayside.

Chat is very useful. Here or at club meetings or at a show or at a friends house. Books are useful too. IF someone know what question to ask here they will get several answers. SOme of them high quality, and possibly one or two off the mark. But lots of time I read books and become aware of a new issue or opprotunity or approach or issue that was not even on my radar before. SO no way I could have asked the right question. Bottom line: learning, thinking, reading, asking, trying ... all necessary for excellence. One point: no book can ever provide the experience of posting a pic here and saying look wiat I got, look what I did. LOts of time our firends and families tolorate our hobby but do not get as excited as we do. COming here to bask in everyone's excitement is a real pleasure. It would be nice if some of the more useful tips and stories were collected in one place. But this take some work. It would even be nice to have a FAQ section because some questions get asked and answered every few months - and not always with the same quality. Usually the answer is good enough, but ofetn not as good as an excellent discussion in our thread history. QUestions about hardness, pellets, sized, rotary vs vibe, taking good photos, breaking rock, .... these would be great in an FAQ. Beople ask for online tutorials. We refer them to the main site, to Cher's, to the ones at the RockShed.com, and to other places. An FAQ could have some links to high quality tutorials. We could even have links to high-quality threads that are burried in our history. But this takes work. Look how bare the Wikipedia entry on rock tumbling is: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_tumbling -- maybe some of us could start to intentionally improve this entry.

I added to the Wiki article and stuck a link to this board at the bottom. Anyone else care to contribute?

Well, since I suggested it, I will make a stab over the next few days.

Just a note that Wikipedia has been making noises about links to boards like this one and has been yammering and yawing about removing them all because they are not "quality" links.
Go figure.

How is a forum dedicated to the subject matter not a good reference?

I thought they might. I think it has to do with having references to sources and not to resources. Exactly. They haven't, however, pulled any links. They started yapping about this last year but nada has been done about it. I keep and breed rainbowfish and have written some stuff and submitted a lot of pictures for Wikipedia. I also run a rainbowfish specific board named Bowheads! When I added a link to my board to the main rainbowfish page, there was some whining about it, but no one has removed it. Removing it in this instance would not be smart since my board is one of the very few resources/sources on the net. Eileen

Deb's idea about a FAX section sounds great.I think it might need a comittee of some of the best experts here to select submissions for inclusion and,of course,Administrative approval.Just a thought.Mike.
