i finally got my tumblers 3lb double barrel up and running. i have a mix of 6 1/2-7 1/2 hardness stones. good hand full of 1/8th to 1/2 in garnets, hand full of plastic pellets, and ceramic media to top it off. started with 3 tablespoons of the course that came with the tumbler(looks a lot courser then the stuff I ordered from the rock shed). it's been goin for 6 days now (recharge tomorrow yippee) i have opened it each day to note the progress(first tumble, whats goin on in their). and foamy bubbles, full to the top. now i put enough water in till it just started to come up on the top layer of rocks(Good right?). well i added a few Tums the first day and 2nd with no effect. Yesterday when i opened all foamy so i got some baking soda from fridge. added a good pinch mixed it checked out the progress and put back to tumbling. Not paying attention i didn't put it in the second one. Today on inspection #1 had no bubbles what so ever #2 was full of foam. My accidental experiment! they are getting smooth and rounded so I must be doing something right sorry for the long wind and thank you all for the information. I will take a few pics on the recharge and cleaning. Should i wash with borax in tumbler for a day or just clean really good when it's time for the next grit? ?

I wouldn't worry about the bubbles. It sounds like it is doing fine.
Some people wash between the coarse tumble and the next round (medium tumble). Others don't (and only wash after the later stages). It couldn't hurt to rinse thoroughly, put back in the barrel with water-to-just-below-the-top-of-the-rocks and 1 TB of Ivory soap and/or Borax, then tumble for 1-24 hours. Or you could just rinse the rocks and barrel thoroughly and move on.

Yes, agreed. As long as your barrel isn't bulging out with the top ready to pop off from pressure inside and as long as the rocks sound like they are tumbling over each other, then foam doesn't matter.
(I clicked the wrong button when I tried to modify my profile and now I'm back to one post!!)

Thanks for the input i figured it was all good. I got to do the first recharge on it yesterday. Boy are the starting to look great!! Can see some shaping and smoothing. Have some Labradorite in there and you couldn't see much color change but now the whole thing shimmers blue. Waiting the first week wasn't so bad but after seeing the progress at the recharge boy this is gonna be hard to wait. The nice part is as soon as these are done I have about 40 More Lbs of rock to make all pretty.

oh yeah read that. LOL!!! I was feelin the same way. More tumblers more rocks faster right! i figure at two -three lb barrels and all these rocks i'll be 80 by the time i get these done but what about all the other stuff i plan on finding or buying. My wife dosent see my point? I know i'll buy and find a ton of rock and when she says i have to get rid of it i can says two or three really big tumblers will do the trick LOL. I was looking at two 15 lbers for grind and the little one for polish is that to much to ask for. oh birthday in 4 days HONEY COME HERE (shhhh i see a new tumbler in my future) ;D ;D
