I shaped my first cab then sanded on 220,600,1,200 dia. belts then into the vibe at 800A.O. with lots of ceramic cylinders, and a few pieces of agate and jasper. The Labradorite chipped and scratched some.I assume that the thin layers of the Lab. are delicate. The agate and jasper and maybe even the ceramic are too hard?Is it possible to tumble and how?Mike.

I have seen it done, but the feldspar mineral are macrocrystalline and very subject to fracturing at right angels.

Why did you go from 1200 back to 800?

Toad: it works fof me on hard stuff.Since 1,200 diamond is roughly equal to 400S.C.,I feel I need a step before pre-polish.Mike.

I don't think we ever did sort out whether the "equaity" of diamond and SC was cutting speed or scratch size, or even tightness of grade. It just seems that "grit" is grit and 1200=1200, but I could see cutting speed differences, or even the 1200 diamond being much more evenly graded.
I'll have to see what I can find on this

This is what I was told by people in the rough business so I'mm gonna share it... I don't know technical terms here so please be patient. Labradorite is softer than normal tumbling rough. If it is not cut in the proper direction, you may as well throw it away because you will lose that irredescence (sp...sorry) SO...it just makes sense to me that unless you start out with a properly cut slab, it's not going to tumble either.
Am I out there on this?
