I picked this rock up at a friend's today. Anyone got an idea what it is. The white color seems to follow the fault lines. The darker color is closer to black than the photo shows.

Sometimes it helps to photo the rocks wet...lets us see it with more vibrant colors. I can't guess cause it appears a little blurry.

I wet the slabs and took pictures yesterday. I will post them when the power comes back on at home. Not set up to do so at work. Lynne, I don't think this rock is super hard, probably middle of the road judging by the way it cut. I did notice that as the blade came through the top of the rock, it seemed to chip a little more than most.

Where you at in Louisiana? Husbands cousin came to Oregon ahead of Gustav and is still here staying away from Ike! (lives in N.O.)

I live on south side of Shreveport, NW part of state. In-laws and one son and my fishing partner live in Baton Rouge. They were out of power for week to week and a half. Some roof damage on my sons home. Took my generator down there form them last Sunday. Got it back today just in time for power to come back on. Out for about 24 hrs only. It gets worse as you get over into Texas. Here are some pics of the rocks I posted taken when wet.

Well Bob...glad to hear it wasn't any worse than it was for you & yours. My husband was born in Baton Rouge and I think Daniel (deb193redux) who now lives in Oregon is a N.O. guy.
I have a piece of black rock with a white vein that came with a box of tumbling mix from someone here on the board. I'll post a pic Monday cause I think it's very close to what you have. I have a feeling it may have already been ID'd though! LOL

I think you have some of the same stuff for sure. I just started fooling with rocks and looking, but I haven't seem anything else that was at that have two colors as far apart as these in the same piece of material. I do have some geologists friends. Maybe I will ask one of them. Ought to get a good story anyway.
