Hey folks, has anyone ever seen (owned, used) one of these before? I'm having a hard time finding any info on it. Pretty cool old set up, 16" with a hose hook up underneath the reservoir that directs the fluid to the side of the blade. There's a pulley and tip weights for the feed, and a set up on the side that apparently takes a polishing wheel. It's all cast and HEAVY. Good motor, and though the blade needs replaced it spins true and quiet. I picked it up along with a few hundred pounds of agate, jasper, pet wood, etc for under $200! I'm flying out to Little Rock in the morning and won't have a chance to look through everything until next weekend So, y'all ever seen a saw like this?

Nelson built quite a wide range of lapidary machines in the sixties (I think). At any rate, they are no longer either in business, or no longer make lapidary machines. Here in the Pacific North West there are still a number of these saws etc, and all are built like they were made to last. Woody

I know this is an old post, but I just got one of these and would like to trade photos and information. I am going to rebuild this saw but want to try and identify which parts might be missing.
Thanks,

Interesting design. It looks like you could get it cutting with just a little cleanup. The X brace between the front and rear legs looks almost like it might have been salvaged from an old treadle Singer sewing machine.
I've heard of Nelson machines, but this is the first I've seen. Post pics of the rebuild.

Thanks for the quick responses. Photo's of the saw (and the rebuild progress) can be seen here home.comcast.net/~ory_gone/I am interest in the guard around the main shaft, the interior of the sump, the original location of the power switch and the destination of the tube coming out of the pump (on the pulley side). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Orygone:
Have a look at the Puget Sound Knappers web site. Jim Keffer has two of these, and has done complete restorations of them. He really likes them, and can answere all your questions about them. Woody...from Warshingtun

Thanks for everyone for the leads and information. I have several emails out to these people.
On an unrelated note, I seem to have a habit of stumbling into the odd stuff. I have an O'Brien faceter (found in a junk store for $20) and just recently acquired a 4 wheel arbor made by Stone Mason
Thanks again everyone!

Fran I'm sad to say I've done nothing with this saw but let it rust rest. Orygone here's a couple pictures I took tonight The little copper tube that comes out near the pulley turns and stops and is sealed at the end The eccentric/cam thing (which I'm still trying to wrap my head around). The guy on Jean's link says it "pivots the blade carriage up and around the rock about 90 degrees. This enables the blade to contact the rock at a smaller area as it cuts." Hope these pics help, our model numbers are different but for the most part they look the same.

Thanks for the pictures, they help quite a bit, although the tubing coming out of the pump (pulley side) is still a mystery, our goes t the exact same place that mine does! The saw I have is in running condition and I saw it cut a rock. The gearbox under the motor drives the cam that causes the mainshaft to raise and lower about 1/4 of inch. That oscillation means the blade is touching less surface area of the rock while its cutting. If anyone is interested, I can always see about firing this one up and grabbing a short video of the mainshaft movement. Thanks again!

Did you restore that or did you find it like that? I got saw from Brian a month or so back, restoration in progress.
