I had a hole wear through a lid on a 3lb barrel so I put a tire patch on it. It looks good but I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this ? I thought it woulden't hurt to ask before I start a batch.

I bet it's a Lortone???
Lortone covers are notorious for wearing holes right in the center where the screw is.
I ALWAYS put a band aid under the rubber before I use the unit. When I say band aid that exactly what I mean!
Put a band aid over the screw head as if it were a cut on your finger and fahgetaboutit!!!
Your tire patch should be fine as long as it's on the "outside" of the rubber toward the lid nut toward the inside of the barrel.

I successfully had a large tire "boot" patch installed on the outside bottom of my 40 lb barrel liner. I've used this tumbler constantly for about 15 years and the rotating rocks "spin" at the center of a drum and eventually wear this part thin. For the lid liners, I just go to a hardware store and buy sheet rubber and make my own. Bob

I have used the tire patch trick on the Thumler lids and it works for awhile

Good advice, Connrock. I didn't know the screw would wear a hole through the lid. I'm going to do my barrels tonight.

I have used tire patches on both the inside and outside of barrels- the trick on the inside (besides getting the rubber REAL clean) is to apply the patch per directions- then after its dry apply the cement to the entire patch area and over the seams then allow to dry- dust with some talc and tumble on!

I wore out the lid gasket on my Thumler Model B and used an old inner tube to make a new one. Cheap and easy, with lots of rubber left over.
