Once again, I am going out of town. I thought I was finished with Summer, and now I get to go back into Summer heat. I'll be in Vegas...the northern end. I don't know what's down there, but if there's anything fairly close...please help. I am thinking I may just go back down towards Laughlin and dig Fire Agate again if there's nothing else. I will be taking 2 other guys, and one of them is the same one I got hooked petrified wood hunting in Showlow. Thanks for any directions, heads-ups...or advice. Steve

Well, as always, you're all invited to come out to Pahrump to take the hike up to my Chrysocolla. You keep everything you can mine and carry down. Let me know as soon as possible if you'd like to do it so that I can set the day aside. It's not a real easy climb, so don't do it if you're not in pretty good shape.

Michael John, How far is it away from Vegas?? I'd like to do that, depending on how far. As far as setting a day aside, it really depends on how well the job goes. Thanks for the offer...and I think I'm in hiking shape! :^))) Steve

Steve, I'm about 60 miles west of Vegas ... an hour / hour-and-a-half drive. A lot of people here commute to work in Vegas.
It's a nice hike to the mountain, and up the base, but ascending from there to the top isn't easy, and a bit dangerous. There's a lot of loose shale which makes for unsteady footing. Most trips have been uneventful, but I've had my share of nasty spills. Not trying to scare you away or anything, just letting you know that it's more than what most people would consider a "hike".
What are the dates that you have scheduled to be in Vegas?

Steve: If you haven't left yet. Buffington Pockets has an area of agate and opal. It is North of Vegas off of I-15 at exit 75. Take the exit and drive east till the paved road takes a left turn. Keep going straight on the gravel road about 5 to 6 miles. I was just there a week and a half ago. Unfortunately I couldn't get all the way up because my car didn't have enough clearance. A high clearance vehicle is a must as well as lots of water. The road follows a stream bed and where it crosses the stream there are some fairly large boulders. We hiked a ways up the road and did find some nice smaller pieces of agate and some larger pieces of gray flint or chert material.

FYI ... looks like Steve and I will be hooking-up in about a week to go up to the Chrysocolla. I'm REALLY looking forward to it! I'm hoping that we'll be able to make a day of it so that we have ample time to get him the best stuff possible to take home. With how hectic my life has been lately (today's my last day of moving), it's been a couple of months since I've been up there, so it'll be great to get away and have some fun.

Yep...Another Invitation that my work got in the way! I got back home tonight, and the job lasted a few days longer than expected. I swear to G...that the Contractors nowadays...do not do what they're supposed to do. We had major framing issues....MAJOR! How can you frame a roof where the hips come in 2' from the outside corners! It puts a damn corkscrew in a metal roof that isn't supposed to have one! And not too mention, the 20+ pillars that were built were all different sizes which took almost 3 days to install. Really upset i wasn't able to hook up with Michael. After 12 hour days in the heat....it took a toll on my body! It's good to be back home, but I would have enjoyed going out rocking! I am definitely looking forward to next weekends trip! Steve
