I don't see why not, since I believe the tumbler design itself was not changed; just the barrels were.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

The original barrels look like paint cans? Are they thicker on a old thumbler or will a paint can actually take being used to tumble rocks? Was that you who "won" the auction?

No, it was not me that won the auction. I had thought if one of these older tumblers could be updated with a new rubber barrel and could be purchased very cheap, then maybe I would go that route. But I will either just buy a new Lortone 33-B or wait until after Christmas when people are unloading tumblers they got as presents and did not like them?
Its no wonder tumblers have a reputation for being noisey if the original ones had metal barrels. And like you, those metal barrels look like paint cans, but I have not seen one close up, just on ebay.

I tried a one gallon can as a barrel and the lid separated from the barrel at the seam.
I had lined it with indoor/outdoor carpet both to deaden the noise and prolong the life of the barrel. I think paint cans will develop holes in the sides relatively quickly without a liner (if it holds together!). I believe the older paint can tumbler barrels have a rubber liner.

Hey Chuck,
That makes a lot more sense if they are rubber lined. In that case, if they are still water tight, they probably would not need to be replaced. I was just worried they would be too noisey to use around the house.

Yes the "new" barrels will fit right on those old machines- the machines themselves have not changed much at all!
