I'm currently running some Fallon, NV wonderstone in stage 4.
Stages 1 & 2 went well...man, this stuff is soft. Stage 1 really chewed up the rough edges and this stuff looks great.
My problem is that when it came out of stage 3, it didn't seem to have the dull shine that other types of rock has shown. I did a burnish between 3/4 for 24hours.
Going into stage #4, I feel a little uneasy about what will appear. I thinking this stuff won't take a shine from AO in a tumbler.
Anyone have experience with this Wonderstone? Also based on a search I did here on the board, I don't see any tumbled Wonderstone pix....so now I'm worried this is all for nothing!
Thanks in advance - --

Hi Matt Wonderstone can be a tough one to get a good shine on. It mostly depends if you have some rock that was formed with some tight crystal formation or loose. The loose will absorb water while the tight will pool on the rock. Try some rough but it sounds like you have a porous rock. Which means you will not get the nice shine you get with a normal tight crystalline rock. Hope this helps.

The stuff from Fallon ranges too, I've seen some really high quality stuff from there but also some that ultimately just won't polish.

There's Wonderstone and there's Wonderstone! The "wonderstone" that comes from Africa is soft at about a 1.5-3 on the Moh's scale and is used primarily for carving in lapidary. The "wonderstone" "we" are looking for is a hardness of a 6-7 and is called Rhyolite,,,, www.greatrough.com/rough_rhyolite_wonderstone.shtmlconnrock

Never have had luck getting that Mirror Shine on Wonderstone. I pretty much have given up on it- Matter of fact I got to get it all together and sell it to someone who can use it.

When I have worked with Wonderstone I finished it with spray fixatives purchased from art supply stores. This gives it a shine but not a 100% mirror finish. I am still happy with the end results which is better than the dull porous finish without it.
