What would happen if sand was used for tumbling? If the water and sand smothes stones in the lakes, than wouldn't it do the same thing in a tumbler?
I told youa'll it was a DUMB ?

Yes, but remember Mother Nature has millions and millions of years to do it, which I suspect you don't. SiC grit is much faster - a matter of weeks.
(No question is dumb if you don't know the answer. That's basically what this forum is for.)

We should really create an FAQ and put this in it. It comes up pretty frequently, so it's not a dumb question.
Sand also breaks down much faster.

An FAQ for a number of regular questions would be good

FAQ... that's ;D ;Ddumb ;D ;D
IMHO... since there are no dumb questions...better to let anyone ask questions, no matter if you've seen them before. Let them start a dialog and get acquainted with the other members.

It may be because I'm retired now and have more time to spend here but I have to agree with chassock about asking questions.
I guess to some of us here it may get boring or even aggravating at times when we are asked the same questions over and over again but I actually enjoy it.It makes me think back to when I had a reply to a posting and the word "lapidary" was used in it. I was a newbie's newbie and had to look it up in the dictionary!
When I first got on line and it opened up the world to me I felt VERY inferior asking that infamous "dumb question" so for the most part I did a lot of reading and very little posting. Now we call it "lurking".
The response I got from the people was amazing to me as they were all so VERY nice to and answered EVERY single question I asked,,,,dumb or not!
Now I get to be "nice" and I enjoy it!

The thing about "dumb" questions is that there are a dozen people who were just too chicken to ask the same question. SO there really are no "DUMB" questions- just to many people afraid to ask. FWIW I did try sand once- after a week there was no sand remaining so I added more- another week went by and the sand was gone-and the rocks were pretty much unchanged. It was then that the expense of grit was deemed "worthwhile"
