Just purchased a tumbler for my 7 yr old's bday yesterday. He's always been fascinated by this so I'd like to encourage him. I know next to nothing about rocks other than trying to help him.
We got some rock and mineral kits, but does anyone have a recommendation on a book to get for him that would have a lot of pictures (7 yr old not quite reading yet), that can help us id what we find before tumbling? Thx.

Most of what tumbles well is agate or jasper. Some others are ameythst or jade or ... a few others. Any rock with a hardness of 5-7 on the mohs hardness scale will generally take a nice polish in a rock tumbler. Thing is any book about rocks, geology, or minerals will have one or two pics of jasper/agate and then the other 95% will be stuff that does not tumble.
You might try looking for a hardness kit that gives a sample of rock from each level of hardness. Should be fun.
There are books that show varities of agate - but you will not be able to go out and find them in your area,

I found this book at Amazon.com. I'm not sure if it would help for sure or not, but it might.
Looking at Rocks (My First Field Guides) (Paperback) by Jennifer Dussling (Author), Tim Haggerty (Illustrator) "Rocks are in the ocean, underground, on the beach, and in the mountains..."
Amazon list it for $6.99.

Just circling back in case any digs this up. The Audobon field guide to Rocks and Minerals is awesome. Tons of pictures with other great info. My son spent hours yesterday looking through it.
