Hi everyone,
I was wondering about the grit that Thumlers supplies with their products and their "4 week/4 grit" grinding process.
The coarse and fine grind are labeled 60/90 and 120/220. Got those two. The pre-polish has no additional labeling, but smells like vanilla coffee creamer (one guys opinion). The polish is the same way (except for the smell maybe).
I have some rocks that my grand-daughter found as a core sample. I used a hand sledge to break it up for the tumbler. The load went through 4 stages, but I was so unhappy that I started it over with coarse. The load is now in "pre-polish". I was considering using AO 1000 (aluminum oxide 1000 grit) next for a week then the polish. For my way of thinking this plan makes sense, but only if the AO 1000 is a grit that is "between" Thumler's pre-polish and polish. I read on the Rock Shed web-site that some material benefits from the extra AO 1000 stage.
I could just throw away the polish that I bought in the Thumler's grit package, but I did spend perfectly good money on it. I then ordered coarse (60/90), fine (120/220), pre-polish (500), AO 1000, and polish from the Rock Shed. I can't bring myself to throw away grit that can still be used.
I wish that I had pictures of the rock, but I have not taken any of that batch yet.
If I have not rambled so much that everyone is confused as to my actual question, any thoughts?

I took the core sample out of the pre-polish stage last night and moved it to AO 1000. I also took the time to take a picture of the load (wet). Anyway, this is the one and only picture that actually came out last night. We call this load "granite" because we don't know what else to call it. After going through the pre-polish stage (again) the rock seems to have a much less pitted surface, so my hope is for a decent shine.....eventually. LOL.
Here is the picture:
Thanks,
Randy
